Doing the ‘do

MARLEY & ME, PREMIERE

For over a decade, Jen’s been a tonsorial trendsetter, and it’s easy to see why – no matter what the style, her hair consistently looks great. Chris McMillan is the man behind many of Jen’s hottest hairstyles, and lately he’s talked to Elle and Allure about the secrets behind Jen’s perfect tresses.

In the piece that he wrote for Allure, Chris revealed the tricks he used for some of Jen’s recent red carpet looks. For the soft, flowing look he created for the Marley & Me Los Angeles premiere (above), his technique was very simple indeed:

“For the movie, I had cut bangs on Jennifer, and by the time the premiere came around, they were growing out, so she had these sexy long layers around her face. I blew out her hair and tucked it behind her ears as it cooled so it didn’t feather.”

And what about a perfect ponytail, like the one Jen rocked in Rome? Chris revealed that this ‘do can actually be very practical:

“I had given Jennifer a really smooth, sleek blowout in Paris the day before, so by the time we arrived in Rome her hair was soft but not too fluffy— perfect for pulling back. Ponytails are ideal for jet-lag hair, since she doesn’t have to sit through a lengthy blow-dry.”

Meanwhile, in a conversation with Elle’s Emily Hebert, Chris talks about the things that have influenced the styles he’s done on Jen over the years. Above all, he says that Jen prefers natural-looking styles:

“She’s not one to say, ‘Oh, I want something really funky.’ She likes pretty, sexy hair. ‘Pretty’ to me is adding texture, and ’sexy’ is undone-looking hair.”

And he reveals that change could be in the air (or hair, as it were) very soon:

“She’s actually overdue for a short cut—we’ll probably be doing that soon. But it won’t be because of trends; it’s because she finished three movies, she has a lot of press to do, and it just makes the hair really nice, thick, and full. We wouldn’t do the same bob as before; we’d do something a little different.”

No matter what look she’s rocking, though, it’s not all about the hair with these two. Chris tells Elle that Jen is not just a client, but a wonderful friend as well:

“She loves her dog, she loves her friends. She’s always like, “I’m having a pizza party tonight—come over,” you know what I mean? Those are the things she has fun with. Not only is she a great client and fun to work with, but she’s also one of the greatest friends I have. She seriously is—she knows how to be a friend, and she has taught me how to be friend. I’m the luckiest person in the world.”
